Does Your Child Have the Academic Blahs?

It’s the last part of the school year!  All the folders are tattered from use and school has lost the excitement of fall!  Your child is dreaming of summer vacation!  How do you keep your child motivated?  It isn’t always easy, but here are some quick tips.

  • Remember to involve your child in finding solutions
  • Make your discussions collaborative, rather than confrontational. Ask your child questions about how they feel about school
  • Make sure that your teens are using their agenda properly
  • Make sure that your teens have all the supplies they need to be successful.  Sometimes buying a new notebook, agenda, or other organizational materials can give your child just the boost which is needed
  • Find out if your child needs extra help in any classes and arrange for that help.  Contact the school for tutors or an academic coach.
  • Plan at least one thing for the summer that your child can look forward to.  Get your child’s input on the planning of the activity.
  • Have your child speak with older teens or college students to find out how sustained effort can pay off.  Find older teens or college students through the school, church, or a community organization if you don’t know someone with a successful older teen.
  • Have your teens speak to someone who works in a field which interests them.  Professional love sharing what they know.  Meeting someone in a field that interests your child can be very motivating.  It doesn’t have to be the field which turns out to be your child’s major.  Just seeing how working hard and preparing can lead to success can be very motivating.  Shadowing this professional can even be more motivating!  Having an adult outside the family gives a child a new perspective on the future, as well!

Teens lose motivation for a variety of reasons.  Academic coaching can help by providing them with the best tips for their personal learning style, which can help your teen save time and stress in their quest for academic success.  An academic coach can help reinforce what you are trying to communicate to your child, which helps decrease tension between parent and child.  Learn how to implement strategies that work for your child’s academic success!
