Would it Kill You to Put Down Your Cell Phone?
Have you ever asked yourself this question while trying to compete with your teen’s electronic devices? Parents have to compete with i-phones, i-pods, i-pads, TV, and a myriad of other electronic devices. No wonder our teens are not very adept at face-to-face communication with all these distractions.
Many teens find it difficult to begin and/or maintain conversations due to the fact that they lack practice. Teens almost always prefer to text each other. Most avoid face-to-face conversations whenever possible. This lack of ease with conversation can affect their relationships with family, friends, teachers, and prospective employers.
Through social skills coaching with Connecting, Inc, teens practice conversation starters through role-playing various situations. Teens learn to make conversation, rather than just talking about themselves. They also practice asking open-ended questions, rather than just yes/no questions to keep the conversation going. They practice good listening skills by keeping good eye-contact and responding to comments made by the other person.
